About the Course: The objective of this Post-Crash Procedures – Driver Training is to be prepared and know what to do after a Commercial Vehicle Accident. Even the safest drivers can find themselves in an accident. The moments following a crash can be overwhelming, making it difficult to think clearly. This course equips you with the knowledge and procedures to navigate this situation effectively.

• Master the procedures for handling fires involving your vehicle’s engine, tires, or cargo, including proper fire extinguisher use.

• New applicants for a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)

About the Course Director: Jared Kline is VP of DOT Compliance and Risk Management for Compliance Navigation Specialists Inc. Course Curriculum:

This class will be broken down into several sections:

Being involved in an accident can be stressful, but knowing what to do can help ensure everyone’s safety and a smoother claims process. This guide outlines the essential steps to take after a collision.

1. Secure the Area:

• Come to a Complete Stop: Immediately halt your vehicle and activate your hazard lights.
• Relocate If Safe: If your vehicle is obstructing traffic or poses a danger, cautiously move it to the roadside, away from traffic flow.
• Set Up Warning Signals: Deploy warning devices like flares or cones (if available) a safe distance behind your vehicle to alert approaching traffic. Refer to specific placement instructions based on the road type (two-lane, divided highway, etc.).

2. Assess for Injuries:

• Check Occupants: Evaluate yourself and any passengers in your vehicle for injuries. If there are injuries, call 911 immediately.
• Remain at the Scene: Do not leave the accident scene until law enforcement arrives, unless you require medical attention yourself.

3. Document the Incident:

• Capture Photos: Take pictures of the damage to your vehicle, the other vehicles involved, the surrounding area (including traffic signs and weather conditions), and any injuries (with the injured person’s permission).
• Prioritize Safety: While taking pictures, be cautious not to walk into traffic or put yourself at further risk.

4. Contact Authorities and Employer:

• Inform Your Employer: Report the accident to your company dispatcher or supervisor as soon as possible, following their specific instructions.
• Cooperate with Testing: Comply with any law enforcement requests for post-accident testing (if applicable).

5. Report the Accident:

• Leave Damaged Vehicle: Do not operate a damaged vehicle unless instructed to do so by law enforcement or your company.
• Exchange Information: Share information with the other driver(s) involved, including names, contact details, insurance information, and license plate numbers. You may also be required to file a preliminary accident report with law enforcement at the scene.
