The purpose of this course is to train current or aspiring Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) drivers to recognize and report human trafficking, whether they are completing it as part of company onboarding, annual refresher training, or just starting out under the Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) rules.

What is human trafficking?

Human trafficking is a serious crime in which people are exploited for labor or commercial sex. It affects communities across the country and can occur in places commercial motor vehicle drivers visit every day, including truck stops, rest areas, hotels, and businesses along major highways.

Traffickers may use force, fraud, or coercion to control victims and prevent them from seeking help. Human trafficking does not always involve moving someone from one location to another, and the warning signs may not be immediately obvious.

Drivers may encounter indicators such as someone appearing to be controlled by another person, being unable to speak freely, or showing signs of fear or abuse. Recognizing these warning signs can help drivers identify situations that should be reported.

Within the trucking industry, drivers are considered professionals and are in a unique position to support prevention. Their daily presence on the road allows them to notice suspicious activity and share information that could help someone in danger. Drivers should report suspected trafficking safely without confronting a suspected trafficker or attempting a rescue themselves.

This training for CMV drivers will help drivers understand human trafficking, recognize potential warning signs, and know how to respond safely and effectively.

By the end of this Human Trafficking Awareness Course, a Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver will:

  1. Understand human trafficking and how it intersects with the trucking industry.
  2. Recognize warning signs and situations that may indicate trafficking.
  3. Know how to report suspected trafficking safely and support prevention.
